Alicia is a self-identified Xicanotita from the wonderland known as occupied Aztlan. She is the first woman in her immediate family to successfully sleigh the dragons of academia and receive a Master’s degree in Journalism from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism—where she specialized in digital media with an emphasis in video storytelling.
Alicia is #ChIFF’s media relations liason & social media director, determined to win your social media follows one # at a time.
Her first love was arte & cultura in LA. Her first career move steered her into the publicist realm for world-renowned museums. She is partially responsible for the First Fridays’ series at the LA County Natural History Museum. In the process, the reporter arrow struck her. Equipped with little else besides ganas, she became a published journalist interviewing the likes of musicians including Lila Downs, Manu Chao, Tom Morello & Los Aterciopelados.
This was fun, but upon discovering the red road, she was compelled to dive deeper as a reporter to cover social justice-oriented media. She believes the Great Mystery conspired, placing her in the right time and the right place one fateful day, when she came across a group of soul rebels on a mission to create an internationally syndicated radio show for and about youth seeking truth. 11 years later Soul Rebel Radio continues to broadcast every 1st Friday of the month on 90.7 FM www.kpfk.org,.
Alicia has been a reporter/producer and radio collective member for the last nine years. When she’s not letting her reportera interests lead her down the latest tochli cueva she’s establishing this alternative media space in LA for the 7 generations to come.
Her work has been published & aired on AJ+, Brooklyn & Boyle, Pacifica Radio KALW & Oakland North &. Tweet her @AliciaVargas_CS
